Wildlife and Glacier Viewing Tour in
Blackstone Bay, Prince William Sound
Depart
Anchorage
for a 1-hour and 15-minute drive to
Whittier
on
Alaska
’s
only National Scenic Byway watching for eagles, Dall sheep, beluga
whales and moose along the way.
You’ll pass through
Portage
,
where the 1964 earthquake caused the land to drop between 6 and 12
feet along the Turnagain Arm.
High tides then flooded the area, forcing the estimated 50
to 100 residents of
Portage
to move. Rustic old
buildings and “Ghost Forests” are visible signs of remains by
the invading saltwater. Then
you’ll continue on through two mountain tunnels to
Whittier
.
Arriving at the
Port
of
Whittier
passengers will board the Prince William Sound Cruises & Tours
Vessel for a four-hour adventure in
Prince
William Sound
.
You will travel approximately 50 miles round trip to
experience two active tidewater glaciers, Beloit Glacier and
Blackstone Glacier. During
the cruise, you will be able to participate in marine experiments,
viewing plankton through a microscope and touching actual glacier
ice! You will learn
about the forces of nature that formed
Prince
William Sound
during the last Ice Age.
You will view breathtaking waterfalls and several bird
rookeries with thousands of seabirds.
A delicious lunch will be served on board while underway to
the glaciers.
