Assessing Your Core Competencies & Competitive Strategy-

Herein we examine the capabilities your company has developed to date --to achieve your stated growth & competitive strategy at the end of four trial rounds of competition--

You began with a vision and a strategic direction. For example, you may have planned to compete as the leading high technology company-concentrating your resources on developing high quality/cutting edge brands for the High End, Performance, and Size segments...Or you might have decided to compete in every segment  on price..... However--regardless of what competitive strategy you selected -- the critical question is: To what degree did you develop & integrate your core functional competencies?  For example, it is one thing to say, “We will compete on price”, and another to build a company that can effectively compete on price and still produce a solid return for stakeholders.

Did you develop the requisite competencies in
awareness, accessibility, product redesign, product invention, automation, plant utilization & human resources to successfully achieve the competitive advantage claimed in your strategic objectives?

For example, competencies in automation and human resources would have lead to a competitive advantage in cost leadership. Competencies in awareness, accessibility, and design would have lead to a competitive advantage built upon differentiation.

Assess your Competitive Position- at the end of the first four practice rounds:

1) What competencies do you believe you achieved that were necessary to execute your competitive strategy?

2) What decisions did you make to develop these competencies?

3) To what degree did you achieve any competitive advantage?    Cite specific measures/metrics that demonstrate your success (or shortfall)...
